CLARK, TENA SOUTHERN DISCOMFORT: A MEMOIR Atria Books 2019 1501167952 / 9781501167959 PAPERBACK . Atria Books 9/10/2019. New paperback. Store pick: Tena Clark grew up a Mississippi tomboy during the 1950s-60s. Her wealthy dad ran with other women all over town. Her mom dealt with life by downing bourbon all day. Her parents' fights were legendary, and often involved guns and fists. Tena coped by turning to the family maid Virgie for comfort and the parenting she needed. Life didn't get any easier when Tena realized she was gay, and the implications that had down south. Tena tells her story with laughter, tears, and courage, and it is a story that I guarantee you will want to hear. -Linda H., store volunteer

CONROY, PAT DEATH OF SANTINI The Dial Press 2014 0385343523 / 9780385343527 PAPERBACK . The Dial Press 12/2/2014. New paperback. Store pick: This memoir is a beautiful but emotionally difficult read; however, anyone who has read and liked Pat Conroy will like this book. Conroy has made no secret that his previous works of fiction are based on his family history, and here we learn about his life, his parents and siblings, and the childhood destroyed by their father, Don Conroy. I was astonished to learn that his father was actually worse than the character Bull Meechum in The Great Santini, and that the author was able to forgive him. But the realm of forgiveness is a personal one, and by the end of the memoir Conroy offers enough insight to help the reader understand how this is possible. I highly recommend this to all Conroy fans. -Kathleen
