1 BLAKE, KENDARE THREE DARK CROWNS
HarperTeen 2018 0062385445 / 9780062385444 PAPERBACK .
HarperTeen 4/3/2018. New paperback. 2018/19 SC Young Adult Book Award Nominee. Store pick: Katharine, Arsinoe, and Mirabella are triplets, separated in childhood in order to be raised by families who share their magical gifts: poisoners who can eat or drink anything, naturalists who can control any living thing, and elementals who can command the elements (respectively). They are the next generation of queens, but only one can rule their island home. To determine who that will be, they must fight to the death. But not before living -- making friends, falling in love, and making mistakes. The first in a new YA fantasy series, Three Dark Crowns will keep you on the edge of your seat, taking your breath away with twists you don't see coming. -Melissa, store employee

2 LEE, MIN JIN PACHINKO
Grand Central Publishing 2017 1455563927 / 9781455563920 PAPERBACK .
Grand Central Publishing 11/14/2017. New paperback. Store pick: Pachinko is an epic tale of several generations of a Korean family that leaves their home country for new lives in Japan. Facing prejudice and financial hardship, Sunja and her family persevere to provide for their loved ones. Author Min Jin Lee shows that sacrifice for love is essential and often heartbreaking. Her richly compelling tale takes you on a ride from the Korea of the 1930s to Japan during WWII and the US in the opulent 1980s. The story of Sunja's family will stay with you for a long time. -Linda, store volunteer

3 RIVERS, SUSAN SECOND MRS. HOCKADAY
Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill 2017 1616207361 / 9781616207366 PAPERBACK .
Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill 11/14/2017. New paperback. Store pick: This is an amazing book, I simply loved everything about it. Any fan of historical fiction, novels about human failings and dialog that is almost poetic should read this book. The depiction of the civil war on a very personal level to one woman is stirring and hard to take in. The book is a series of letters to and from various family members and by then end of the first 30 pages you feel invested in every member involved. In some ways it is a revisit to the time when letters were the form of communication that existed and what a picture they could paint. It is hard to believe this is a debut novel, the writing is wonderful. -Jackie W., store volunteer (seconded by Melissa O., store employee)
