283 WALKER, WENDY NIGHT BEFORE
St. Martin's Press 2019 1250198674 / 9781250198679 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
St. Martin's Press 5/14/2019. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: We know Laura is missing after going out on a first date with someone she met on a dating site. At least her older sister Rosie thinks she is missing. The Night Before is told from Laura's point of view from the night before and from Rosie's from the morning after. As usual Wendy Walker’s book is filled with psychological trauma and even a series of sessions with a psychologist which add believability and insight into who Laura is. And, as usual, I couldn't stop reading, and was surprised more than once. The Night Before is a true thriller with a heavy dose of psychology you won't want to miss. -Nancy M., store volunteer

284 WARD, ANNIE BEAUTIFUL BAD
Park Row Books 2019 0778369102 / 9780778369103 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Park Row Books 3/5/2019. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: Beautiful Bad opened with a police detective at the scene of a murder – but we have no idea who is murdered. More than a murder mystery it was a compelling story of the complex love between two friends and the hurt that results when their lives change. I loved reading about Maddie and Joanna’s adventures in the dangerous places they lived and played. I liked both characters (at first) and thought I understand why their friendship ended. Hidden desires, dark secrets, much manipulation, and an ultimate murder come painfully together as all lives are torn apart. Beautiful Bad was a riveting story with a surprise ending…is this a fight for survival, or something much more sinister? -Nancy M., store volunteer

285 WARE, RUTH LYING GAME
Pocket 2019 1982123427 / 9781982123420 PAPERBACK .
Pocket 11/26/2019. New paperback. Releases 11/26/19. Pre-order today! Store pick: The Lying Game is not so much a thriller as it is a mystery which gives us an intense look at the lives of 4 young teens who happened to find each other when they were the most vulnerable, needy and alone. They met for the first time at a boarding school almost by accident when one of the girls lied to a headmistress to protect one of the other students she had just met. The four quickly became close friends and continued their lying as part of a so called ‘lying game’. Their innocence, if there ever was any, was totally gone by the end of their first year when they are forced to leave the school because of a scandal. In addition to what they were supposedly involved in they also end up helping in the covering up of a death never realizing how it would affect their future. The Lying Game is a beautifully written story of love, betrayal and guilt. It is also a story of hope, selflessness, and sacrifice. -Nancy M., store volunteer

286 WARE, RUTH TURN OF THE KEY
Gallery Books 2019 1501188771 / 9781501188770 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Gallery Books 8/6/2019. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: One of the most brilliantly written thrillers I’ve read in a while! Told in a letter written in prison while awaiting trial for murder, Rowan lays out the circumstances of her taking a job as a nanny to a family in Scotland, the death of one of her charges, and her innocence, hoping she can convince a famous solicitor to take her case. The setting in an old manor in the middle of nowhere Scotland adds to the creepy, ghostly, almost gothic like atmosphere. The addition of smart lights, cameras, sounds and the Happy app to control the entire house just add to the feeling that someone is watching Rowan at all times. It is richly written, has a wonderful, complex plot, and an ending that will leave you agape… I’m still trying to process it all. Oh, Ms. Ware… you’ve done it again!! -Nancy M., store volunteer

287 WARE, RUTH WOMAN IN CABIN 10
Gallery Books 2017 1501132954 / 9781501132957 PAPERBACK .
Gallery Books 4/11/2017. New paperback. Store pick: Laura (Lo) Blacklock is a travel journalist with a chance of a lifetime. A trip aboard a small luxury ship owned by millionaire and businessman Richard Bulimar. When Lo is awakened by a noise the first night at sea, she hears someone scream and then a loud splash from Cabin 10 next door. She is sure that someone was thrown overboard. But, no one believes her because no one is missing and even though she saw and talked to a young woman in Cabin 10 it is now very empty and no one matching the woman’s description has been seen by anyone on board. Everything points to the fact that Lo is unreliable and not to be believed. She was recently attacked and has been having nightmares, she drinks way too much, and she has anxiety attacks and has suffered a breakdown. The claustrophobic setting, the small number of suspects, and the question of who you can believe and trust all lead to an Agatha Christie like mystery with thrilling suspense thrown on top. -Nancy M., store volunteer

289 WEBB, DEBRA LIES WE TELL (UNDERTAKER'S DAUGHTER)
MIRA 2019 0778308316 / 9780778308317 PAPERBACK .
MIRA 9/17/2019. New paperback. Store pick: This book is fast paced with several plot lines. Set in a funeral home some of the events are quite raw in detail. Rowan is a complex character with so many questions and traumas in her life it is difficult for her to trust or take anything at face value. Her childhood friend Billy is now the chief of police and the puzzle they must solve seems to have quite a few missing pieces. I did not realize this was a sequel when I started reading, do yourself a favor and read the first book. I can't wait for the next installment. -Jackie W., store volunteer

299 WINEGARD, TIMOTHY C. MOSQUITO: A HUMAN HISTORY OF OUR DEADLIEST PREDATOR
Dutton 2019 1524743410 / 9781524743413 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Dutton 8/6/2019. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: War historians discuss generals and strategies, occasionally the common soldier, but seldom bugs. Alexander the Great, the Visigoths who sacked Rome and the Crusaders lost to mosquitoes. Each mosquito-infested region has its own disease characteristics. Whereas the locals are 'seasoned' to the local diseases and occupy the healthier regions, foreign invaders often blunder into deadly swamps and suffer 50 to 80% deaths or disabilities. Either they conquer quickly and move on, or hang around and die from malaria or yellow fever. The major exception was the post-Columbian invasion of America by Europeans and their African slaves who had the home-town advantage of bringing their own mosquito-vectored diseases to a defenseless indigenous population. An intriguing perspective on human versus human versus mosquito history. My great grandfather died of Yellow Fever a few months before my grandfather was born. -Jim McFarlane, store volunteer and local author

300 WINGATE, LISA BEFORE WE WERE YOURS
Ballantine Books 2019 0425284700 / 9780425284704 PAPERBACK .
Ballantine Books 5/21/2019. New paperback. Store pick: Lisa Wingate is a master storyteller and I am particularly attached to her historical fiction. Each time I read one of the books I learn of a part of our southern past that is mostly forgotten, or in the case of the Tennessee Children's Home, swept under the rug. Rill is an amazing child faced with horrors most of us will be unable to imagine. We have Lisa Wingate to bring them to life and paint a picture of horrible corruption and poverty, but also show the amazing determination that can survive anything. The book is an expose and deeply moving family history. Any fan of southern history, especially South Carolina and Tennessee will enjoy this book. -Jackie W., store volunteer
