282 SPERA, DEB CALL YOUR DAUGHTER HOME
Park Row Books 2019 0778307743 / 9780778307747 HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Park Row Books 6/11/2019. New hardcover. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: Call Your Daughter Home is sure to become a classic in Southern literature. It is a book that I didn’t just read – I lived it and felt it. And even though it was heart wrenching in parts it was also uplifting with a beautiful message of strength, perseverance and the power of women and a mother’s love. It is a beautifully written story of three women whose lives intersect in a small South Carolina town in the 1920s. Gertrude is a poor white woman with 4 daughters who has endured hardships that defy belief and yet finds the strength to do what she must to ensure that her children survive. Oretta is a first generation freed black woman who works for the same family who owned her mother. She too has suffered from loss and pain, the least of which is not being able to do what she knows is right because she must remember her place. Annie Cole is the mistress of the plantation where Retta lives and works and even though she is white and supposedly rich and privileged she too has suffered great loss and pain. Though from totally different backgrounds it is evident that these three women are more alike than they are different as they fight misogyny, poverty, and racism and try to save their families and those they love. -Nancy M., store volunteer (seconded by Nancy H. and Jackie W., store volunteers) Signed by author.

Guts is about the worries kids have and the fears they face as kids, and how those worries and fears can affect all aspects of daily life, even physically in the case of Raina's tummy aches. But it also shows readers that there are healthy ways to deal with those fears, and that even small victories (like getting just a little freaked out instead of completely losing control) are victories worth celebrating. However, as the story of her family is slowly revealed it is obvious that she has not been as successful dealing with her husband and children as she has with her patients. Her marriage has come apart, her daughter Caroline has moved to Australia and they rarely speak and worst of all Caroline’s twin Tom, whom Ruth has always seemed to favor, disappeared two years earlier at the age of 17 without a trace. When Ruth is assigned a new patient, a young man who closely resembles Tom, she knows she should refer him to a colleague but she has never told any of them that her son is missing. She convinces herself that she can help this young man. Perhaps as a way of dealing with her guilt of not being a good enough mother to Tom. Thus begins a spiral of events that are soon out of Ruth’s control. A Good Enough Mother is a deeply insightful story of a mother who always wants more for her child in the name of love, and how this may not always be for the best. It is a fascinating story that takes you inside the world of therapist and patient. -Nancy M., store volunteer

300 WARD, ANNIE BEAUTIFUL BAD
Park Row Books 2019 0778369102 / 9780778369103 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Park Row Books 3/5/2019. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: Beautiful Bad opened with a police detective at the scene of a murder – but we have no idea who is murdered. More than a murder mystery it was a compelling story of the complex love between two friends and the hurt that results when their lives change. I loved reading about Maddie and Joanna’s adventures in the dangerous places they lived and played. I liked both characters (at first) and thought I understand why their friendship ended. Hidden desires, dark secrets, much manipulation, and an ultimate murder come painfully together as all lives are torn apart. Beautiful Bad was a riveting story with a surprise ending…is this a fight for survival, or something much more sinister? -Nancy M., store volunteer
