242 QUIRK, MATTHEW NIGHT AGENT: A NOVEL
William Morrow 2019 0062889168 / 9780062889164 PAPERBACK .
William Morrow 9/17/2019. New paperback. Releases 9/17/19. Pre-order today! Store pick: This is literally a stay-up late, can't put it down action thriller. Peter Sutherland is an FBI agent whose career is tainted by the sins of his father, but guided by his own strong sense of right and wrong. When he receives a panic-stricken call from a young woman named Rose on a secret FBI hot line, he has no idea of the challenges he will soon be facing, or how the decisions he must make will test his moral codes. Sutherland is an approachable and honest character, not imbibed by the author with superhuman strengths or abilities. The story is intricate and fast-paced, yet still feels legitimate and real. Taylor Jenkins Reid takes the reader through the character's personal triumphs and struggles through the life of their band. The book is a love story, story of the struggle of addiction and recovery and of what it means to be talented, famous and still need the basics of life. The author uses a unique style of narrating the story by using interview dialogue. It works well with is effective as it takes you into the thoughts and emotions of each person while developing each character. 250 RICHARDS, EMILIE FAMILY OF STRANGERS
MIRA 2019 0778307859 / 9780778307853 PAPERBACK .
MIRA 6/25/2019. New paperback. Store pick: I really enjoyed this book. The family dynamics were fascinating and led to quickly becoming engaged. Ryan is an interesting individual, she is someone who forged a path and developed a lifestyle counter to that of her family and how she was raised. A surprise phone call from her much older sister she rarely hears from sets her on a journey she can never imagine. Part of it she is uniquely qualified for, finding the circumstances of a crime when she has a cold case podcast is not a huge undertaking. Showing up and keeping her six and eight year old nieces for an indeterminate time is something else all together. There is plenty of family interaction and a former flame is involved. Plenty of action and a complex plot. -Jackie W., store volunteer

This book follows Blanche who is the daughter of Chuck Varner, and man who opened fire in a mall before killing himself, to advance his 'cause'. Blanche has been able to channel her energies and has placed her past in a very neatly and completely sealed box. What happens when the seals of the box are cracked unfolds in this book. 254 RIVERS, SUSAN SECOND MRS. HOCKADAY
Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill 2017 1616207361 / 9781616207366 PAPERBACK .
Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill 11/14/2017. New paperback. Store pick: This is an amazing book, I simply loved everything about it. Any fan of historical fiction, novels about human failings and dialog that is almost poetic should read this book. The depiction of the civil war on a very personal level to one woman is stirring and hard to take in. The book is a series of letters to and from various family members and by then end of the first 30 pages you feel invested in every member involved. In some ways it is a revisit to the time when letters were the form of communication that existed and what a picture they could paint. It is hard to believe this is a debut novel, the writing is wonderful. -Jackie W., store volunteer (seconded by Melissa O., store employee)

255 ROBERTS, NORA COME SUNDOWN
St. Martin's Griffin 2019 1250123097 / 9781250123091 PAPERBACK .
St. Martin's Griffin 3/26/2019. New paperback. Store pick: A saga spanning almost three generations of a family and their journey from a small ranch to a ranching and resort dynasty. The bucolic natural setting is disrupted by the presence of pure evil. Roberts does an amazing job of making the behavior of an evil doer real enough to give you chills. The segues between the generations are smooth and though you have a main character in Bo, daughter who now runs the resort, her brothers are prominent and you will engage in them as well. Don't confuse this with a romance novel, there is plenty of romance, but this is pure thriller! -Jackie W., store employee

259 ROBOTHAM, MICHAEL GOOD GIRL, BAD GIRL
Scribner 2019 1982103604 / 9781982103606 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Scribner 7/23/2019. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: I have read and loved many Michael Robotham books in the past but it has been awhile. After listening to this one I will go back and read the ones I have missed as I had forgotten how much I enjoy his writing style and his characters. In Good Girl Bad Girl we are introduced to Dr. Cyrus Haven a forensic psychologist. He is working with the police on the murder of a teenaged girl and is also helping a friend try and understand a young girl who has been in foster care and ward of the state for years. Both Cyrus and Edie (the girl in care) have horrible experiences in their background. The difference is that Cyrus’s nightmare and his younger life were all made public but no one really knows what happened to Edie or who she really is. Cyrus was a truly interesting character and I enjoyed his interactions with the police detective who has mentored him for years and his interactions with Edie. Both cases kind of merge and we are left with some answers and a satisfactory, though surprising, ending to the murder case. But, Edie’s background is still mostly a mystery. I hope this means that this is the first in a series and Cyrus will be back to help Edie get out of care and on her way to leading a normal life. -Nancy M., store volunteer
