21 BENWAY, ROBIN FAR FROM THE TREE
HarperTeen 2019 0062330632 / 9780062330635 PAPERBACK .
HarperTeen 6/4/2019. New paperback. 2019/20 SC Young Adult Award Nominee. Store pick: 16-year-old Grace has just had a baby. After going through the pregnancy and choosing adoptive parents for her daughter, she now feels unmoored from her life before and wants to find her own biological family. That's how her biological siblings, Maya and Joaquin, come into the picture. Maya, set apart from her adoptive family in looks and temperament, struggles with the fallout of her adoptive mom's secrets coming to light. And Joaquin, in foster care his whole life, struggles with the idea of being worthy of someone's love. All of them grapple with their sense of belonging, but now that they have each other, maybe that will be easier. Benway has written a touching, sometimes humorous, compulsively readable book that will resonate with anyone searching for their place in the world, showing that sometimes where you are is exactly where you belong. -Melissa O., store employee

22 BERNEY, LOU NOVEMBER ROAD: A NOVEL
William Morrow 2019 0062663852 / 9780062663856 PAPERBACK .
William Morrow 10/22/2019. New paperback. Releases 10/22/19. Pre-order today! Store pick: Don't make the mistake of considering this a work of historical fiction (it is, set against and intertwined with the assassination of JFK). Don't consider it a suspense novel (it is, with Frank Guidry on the run for his life from a ruthless assassin and an organized crime boss with contacts everywhere, who are pursuing Frank for what he might know or have done in relation to the killing of JFK), and by no means consider it a love story (although, implausibly it becomes one when Frank falls for a young woman traveling with her two small children, and on the run for reasons of her own). This book is most simply a story, and one that is exceptionally well told. Lou Berney has crafted a very compelling tale with very human and relatable characters, each with their own flaws, secrets, dreams and desires. There are ups and downs, twists and turns, but mostly it's the story that grabs hold of you and keeps you turning the pages to the very end. This book was a joy to read. -Brent B., store volunteer

But on the whole it is a sweet town, where everyone knows his neighbors, and where everyone knows the secrets that this little town harbors. There is still teenage dabbling with the occult just like when Detective Natalie Lockhart was in school, there are troubled marriages just waiting for the trouble to bubble to the surface, and there is murder… too much murder… some solved, some unsolved, some cold cases and some new. As a new hire Natalie is given the cold case of the missing nine and is determined to help find out what happened to these girls over the years. 24 BOBOTIS, ANDREA LAST LIST OF MISS JUDITH KRATT
Sourcebooks Inc. 2019 1492678864 / 9781492678861 PAPERBACK .
Sourcebooks Inc. 7/9/2019. New paperback. Author is from the Upstate. Store pick: I can't say enough good things about this book! As 75 year old Judith Kratt begins to make an inventory of the many beautiful antique items in her ancestral home many of the items bring back memories of her life in 1929 as a 13yo helping her father, Daddy Kratt, run his general store in the small upstate town of Bound, SC and watching how he, often ruthlessly, ran 'his' town and his family. The story is told beautifully through the voice of Judith going back a few years before the night in 1929, when her brother Quincy was murdered, to 1985. Judith is a wonderful, but complicated character and the perfect person to describe what life was like in the deeply segregated south at a time when cotton was king. She always speaks her mind, has trouble relating to others, likes things organized, and loves routines. She is the complete opposite of her younger sister who is truly a free spirit. As Judith makes her list and savors her memories her life suddenly changes. Her sister, Rosemary, who left town 60 years earlier the night their brother was killed and whom she has had no contact with since suddenly returns to Bound. Judith is forced to face more than just her happy memories, as the truth finally comes out about what really happened on that fateful night in 1929. The Last List of Miss Judith Kratt is a story to savor. Even though I wanted to know what happened the night Quincy died I didn’t want the story of Judith’s life to end. The writing is exquisite and paints a picture of a small southern town and its occupants from its hay days in the 20s to the 1980s where time has essentially stood still for many of the occupants. -Nancy M., store volunteer Signed by author.
