129 HORWITZ, TONY SPYING ON THE SOUTH: AN ODYSSEY ACROSS THE AMERICAN DIVIDE
Penguin Press 2019 1101980281 / 9781101980286 HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Penguin Press 5/14/2019. New hardcover. in Brand New jacket. Later printing. Store pick: A few years before the Civil War Frederick Law Olmstead, a young journalist trying to find his place in life before discovering his calling as a landscape architect (Central Park, Audubon Park), was hired by a New York newspaper to travel across the South and report his observations. In 2016 Tony Horowitz retraces Olmstead's journey as much as possible to compare and contrast 160 years of history. Thriving industrial towns have fallen on hard times. Boring little cities have thrived. Some backwoods areas are still backwoods. Texas has boomed and mushroomed. A well-written and insightful work that should intrigue anyone interested in Southern history. -Jim McFarlane, store volunteer and local author

130 HOWARD, LINDA AFTER SUNDOWN
William Morrow 2020 0062842633 / 9780062842633 HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
William Morrow 3/31/2020. New hardcover. in Brand New jacket. Releases 3/31/20. Pre-order today! Co-written by Linda Jones. Store pick: I have been reading, and loving, Linda Howard books for over twenty years. This plot is a departure from many of her previous books, but so beautifully crafted it is hard to put down. A natural disaster that none of us believe could happen does, and the power grid is gone. Sounds bad, right? Actually worse that we could ever imagine. This book chronicles the journey of one small Tennessee mountain town and exposes the best and worst of people. The painstaking detail of everyday life is so well captured you feel you are living it with the residents. I believe this book is perfect for current fans and should also appeal to more technical and even sci-fi fans. (Don't panic, it's not a sci-fi book). -Jackie, store volunteer

Minotaur Books 11/1/2016. New paperback. Store pick: What a fun book!! This page turner is exciting, thrilling, and heart stopping. The US government secretly trained a group of orphaned children to be lethal assassins when they grew up. Evan is one of these children. Now a grown man, he has left the program and disappeared. He only resurfaces to help those in desperate need. It is through this work that one of his enemies has found him. But, which enemy – the government, one of his fellow orphans or a relative of one of the many bad guys he has gotten rid of? 133 HUTCHINSON, SHAUN DAVID BRAVE FACE: A MEMOIR: HOW I SURVIVED GROWING UP, COMING OUT, AND DEPRESSION
Simon Pulse 2019 1534431519 / 9781534431515 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Simon Pulse 5/21/2019. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: This is a memoir about being gay and being depressed, and how the two are not related. I think that last part is especially important in Hutchinson's bigger message that things will get better -- maybe not right away, and maybe not when you want it to, and maybe not how you want it to, but eventually you will find your people and get in a better head space to accept yourself, whatever that entails. -Melissa O., store employee

134 JEWELL, LISA FAMILY UPSTAIRS
Atria Books 2019 1501190105 / 9781501190100 HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Atria Books 11/5/2019. New hardcover. in Brand New jacket. Releases 11/5/19. Pre-order today! Store pick: The Family upstairs is an intoxicating novel, cleverly written, disturbing, yet vibrant, with just enough suspense to keep your interest from the beginning. It is told from 3 points of view in both the past and the present. For Libby the day has finally arrived. She turned 25 and the lawyers for her trust have told her she has inherited an empty mansion in Chelsea, a mansion that has quite a story attached. Lucy is a young single mother of two who is living in France and is definitely very down on her luck. She is living on the streets with her kids and about all we know at the beginning of the novel is that there was an alert on her phone that the baby is 25. Henry tells us about the past – when the new people arrive at his home and stay. No one knew what was going on behind those closed doors so many years ago… how four children were imprisoned and broken and then released…damaged, lost, and warped. No one realizes the strength of the bond those children formed and under the circumstances this bond was formed. Some good twists and turns, a complex plot, and a surprise ending make this story a must read. -Nancy M., store volunteer (seconded by Jackie, store volunteer)

135 JOHANSEN, IRIS HINDSIGHT
Grand Central Publishing 2020 1538762927 / 9781538762929 HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Grand Central Publishing 1/7/2020. New hardcover. in Brand New jacket. Releases 1/7/20. Pre-order today! Co-written by Roy Johansen. Store pick: This is such a great installment in this series. I am a big fan of Kendra Michaels and am always entertained by her powers of observation. The school she attended as a child seems to be under attack. A beloved teacher is killed and the current students parents are in an uproar. When the second murder occurs chaos ensues. Kendra is coerced into helping the FBI with her skills, but demands help to protect one of the most valued things from her childhood. The history of the school hides secrets that must be discovered of the school is to be saved. Kendra's relationship, despite her reluctance, continues to evolve. The plot is rich with supporting characters and sharp turn you cannot predict. The ending is a perfect foreshadowing for the next installment, and I hope it is available sooner rather than later. -Jackie W., store volunteer

136 JOHANSEN, IRIS SMOKESCREEN (EVE DUNCAN, NO 26)
Grand Central Publishing 2019 153871308X / 9781538713082 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Grand Central Publishing 7/30/2019. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: It is amazing to me that Iris Johansen can keep the Eve Duncan series current, relevances and engaging this long, but she does in a compelling fashion. This is one of my favorites in quite some time, the supporting characters are so deep, and single minded in a quest for justice, that you immediately become invested. Journalists who are bold see the worst the world has to offer, corruption at the highest level, brutality for no reason, and the accumulation of wealth at the expense of the poor. This story embodies all of the above with enough twists to keep you entertained to the end. Can easily be read as a stand alone book. -Jackie W., store volunteer

137 JOHN, D.B. STAR OF THE NORTH
Broadway 2019 0525573852 / 9780525573852 PAPERBACK .
Broadway 2/26/2019. New paperback. Store pick: Whatever you thought about North Korea before – including the risk of a nuclear attack – you will soon realize that it could be much, much worse. Jenna Williams is a young very well respected professor of foreign affairs. She is Korean American and the identical twin of Soo-min (Susie) who disappeared from a South Korean beach 12 years earlier while a student in Seoul. Soo-min supposedly drowned while picnicking with a fellow student. Mrs. Moon is a North Korean peasant woman who after spending the last 20 years on a prison farm decides to try her hand in the market place after finding and secretly keeping the contents of a balloon that landed in the woods near her home. Cho is a high ranking official in the regime who believes he is doing what is right. Star of the North may be fiction but each of the extremely well developed and interesting characters and each of their stories are based on facts gleaned from intelligence operations, stories from escapees, stories from prison camp guards and knowledge of the way our state department works. When their three storylines intersect we are treated to a remarkable spy thriller that is as timely as it is terrifying. -Nancy M., store volunteer
