William Morrow 2018 0062567365 / 9780062567369 PAPERBACK .
William Morrow 7/24/2018. New paperback. August Store pick: Mark Fabian, a murdered psychologist, seems to hold all of the secrets as Henry, a detective who grew up in the small town of Campion, tries to gather the clues to the first murder in years. It isn’t long into the investigation when Nadine, a high school classmate of Henry’s, and a long ago patient of Fabian’s soon becomes a suspect. Written from the perspectives of both Nadine and Henry it goes back and forth between past and present. It is methodical, but not slow, as each delve into the secrets of their own troubled pasts. The Last Thing I Told You is a superb police procedural. In addition it delves deeply into the world of psychological trauma and gives us a look at how events during adolescence can affect the young mind. And, it has an ending that was totally unpredictable – unless you are as good a detective as Henry. -Nancy M., store volunteer

Flatiron 2019 1250319471 / 9781250319470 HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Flatiron 7/2/2019. New hardcover. in Brand New jacket. Releases 7/2/19. Pre-order today! Store pick: The Whisper Network is a novel whose time has definitely come. I loved it and couldn’t put it down. It is told first from the perspective of women in general and then in the voice of each of the main characters. It teaches a chilling lesson of how inappropriate actions and words in the work place are often ignored, excused or justified because of pure greed or of potential harm to a career or a friendship. The lives of four women, all in-house lawyers for a large sports apparel company, will never be the same after the company CEO dies suddenly and they find out the general counsel, Ames Garrett, is slated to be promoted to CEO. For years there were whispers about Ames’s treatment of women but nothing was ever openly talked about until the women decide, finally, that enough is enough. And then someone dies! -Nancy M., store volunteer

Gallery Books 2018 150115768X / 9781501157684 PAPERBACK .
Gallery Books 3/6/2018. New paperback. Store pick: Ripped from the headlines of an on-line pod cast that reopens murder cases, this really well written psychological thriller moves rapidly through time as it unravels the circumstances surrounding a small town murder. Twin sisters, who were young teens when their father was murdered and their already mentally ill mother ran away to join a cult, are caught up in this story as each of their lives become social media fodder. Josie was so affected by the tragedies in her past and what she saw as a complete betrayal by her twin Laine that she moved away, changed her name, and lied to her boyfriend about her past. Laine, who witnessed the murder of their father, became the bad seed. She ran with a bad crowd, used drugs, drank too much and caused heartache for all who once cared about her. The suicide death of their mother , whom they had not seen or heard from in 12 years, brought them all back together and forced them to face the past whether they wanted to or not, as they were both hounded by investigative reporter Poppy Parnell . The episodes of the very popular podcast trying to get to the truth forced both girls to re-examine what they knew and remembered. Guilt, trauma, memories are all a huge theme of the book as are lies. Lies to protect those you love, lies to protect yourself from more pain, lies that you may not realize are lies. -Nancy M., store volunteer

HarperCollins 1/8/2019. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: Freefall is a terrific character driven thriller which is told from two perspectives: that of the mother who is still grieving the loss of her husband to cancer two years earlier and of the daughter who ran away when she saw her mother do as her father wished and help him die. This thriller comes out of the gate at top speed. The mother is told her daughter and her daughter’s fiancée were killed in a plane crash and the mother decides she has to learn what her daughter’s life was like for the past two years. The daughter made some really bad choices including not contacting her mother when she needed help, but she had finally found what she thought was true love and was in a good place when the plane went down. She is now determined to survive. Both women display remarkable strength as they each attempt to save the other from the madman who is attempting to kill them both. -Nancy M., store volunteer

Sourcebooks Inc. 2019 1492678864 / 9781492678861 PAPERBACK .
Sourcebooks Inc. 7/9/2019. New paperback. Releases 7/9/19. Pre-order today! Author is from the Upstate. Store pick: I can't say enough good things about this book! As 75 year old Judith Kratt begins to make an inventory of the many beautiful antique items in her ancestral home many of the items bring back memories of her life in 1929 as a 13yo helping her father, Daddy Kratt, run his general store in the small upstate town of Bound, SC and watching how he, often ruthlessly, ran 'his' town and his family. The story is told beautifully through the voice of Judith going back a few years before the night in 1929, when her brother Quincy was murdered, to 1985. Judith is a wonderful, but complicated character and the perfect person to describe what life was like in the deeply segregated south at a time when cotton was king. She always speaks her mind, has trouble relating to others, likes things organized, and loves routines. She is the complete opposite of her younger sister who is truly a free spirit. As Judith makes her list and savors her memories her life suddenly changes. Her sister, Rosemary, who left town 60 years earlier the night their brother was killed and whom she has had no contact with since suddenly returns to Bound. Judith is forced to face more than just her happy memories, as the truth finally comes out about what really happened on that fateful night in 1929. The Last List of Miss Judith Kratt is a story to savor. Even though I wanted to know what happened the night Quincy died I didn’t want the story of Judith’s life to end. The writing is exquisite and paints a picture of a small southern town and its occupants from its hay days in the 20s to the 1980s where time has essentially stood still for many of the occupants. -Nancy M., store volunteer

Lowcountry Bombshell is again filled with unique southernisms, gracious charm, and a cast of eccentric characters. They include Liz’s client, Calista, a Mariyln Monroe look alike who is afraid for her life. Lowcountry Bombshell is a cozy feeling, hard boiled PI novel with a little romance thrown in. The best of three genres all mixed together. -Nancy M., store volunteer Signed by author.

The case dredges up family secrets hidden for years by Charleston aristocrats and if not for the help of Liz’s dead best friend and guardian spirit, Colleen, Liz and her loved ones might not be around for another case. Flatiron 12/5/2017. New paperback. Store pick: Eddie Flynn was a great con-man and an even better lawyer until the aftermath of a disastrous case, which he won, ended with his law license suspended for 6 months, his wife leaving him, and with him spending time in rehab. He vowed never to set foot in a courtroom again but that all changed when the head of the Russian mob kidnapped his young daughter and told Eddie that he had 24 hours to get him acquitted for murder or his daughter would die. The Defense is one of the best legal thrillers I have read in years. The courtroom drama is smart and tricky and shows that there isn’t much difference between a con-man and a good lawyer – think Perry Mason on steroids. Out of the courtroom Eddie becomes a Mission Impossible style action figure and really puts the thrill in thriller. -Nancy M., store volunteer

Not only does this thriller give us a look at a very skilled and clever defense attorney but also at the very smart, but very sick mind of a serial killer. If you like legal thrillers that are truly sit on the edge of your seat thrillers this is one you won’t want to miss. -Nancy M., store volunteer
