1 ANDERS, CHARLIE JANE ALL THE BIRDS IN THE SKY
Tor Books 2017 0765379953 / 9780765379955 PAPERBACK .
Tor Books 4/11/2017. New paperback. Store pick, recommended by Adam: A perfect blend of science fiction and fantasy. Wizard meets science genius, or versus, or romantically entangled, or childhood friends now at odds with their world views, but are still attracted to each other. Great first book from Charlie Jane Anders, one of my favorite IO9 editors. -Adam, store volunteer (Jill's brother)

REDEMPTION ROAD, HART, JOHN
4 HART, JOHN REDEMPTION ROAD
Thomas Dunne Books 2017 1250132118 / 9781250132116 PAPERBACK .
Thomas Dunne Books 5/16/2017. New paperback. 2017 Southern Book Prize Thriller Winner. Store pick, recommended by Nancy M. (seconded by Jill & Melissa): John Hart’s newest novel, Redemption Road, is a thriller. Innocents are dying, people are being chased and tortured and the good guys are hard to tell from all of the bad. It is about Elizabeth Black, a decorated hero cop with a deep dark secret. But, in addition to being a thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout it is a compelling and very emotional story of love – love that is sick and twisted, love that is so blind it allows horrible things to be done in its name, love so hidden by guilt it is hard to see, love born out of despair and a love that is so pure and good it allows hope to shine through. It is obvious that John Hart has poured all of his heart and soul into this beautifully written story of sadness, despair, love and hope. -Nancy M., store volunteer (seconded by Jill Hendrix, store owner, and Melissa O., store employee)

BEFORE THE FALL, HAWLEY, NOAH
5 HAWLEY, NOAH BEFORE THE FALL
Grand Central Publishing 2017 1455561797 / 9781455561797 PAPERBACK .
Grand Central Publishing 6/6/2017. New paperback. Store pick, recommended by Nancy M. (seconded by Melissa): Before the Fall starts off with the crash of a small private plane off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. The cause of the crash is being investigated by the NTSB, the FBI and the SEC. Among the passengers are a news channel mogul, who gets daily death threats, and his family, a wall street executive who is about to be arrested for laundering money for terrorist nations and whose customers have a lot to lose if he talks, and a down on his luck artist named Scott who is hoping to make a comeback with his newest series of paintings. The fact that Scott and JJ, a 4 year old boy, are the only survivors leads to speculation about Scott’s motives before and after the crash. Hawley does an amazing job of giving us insight into the lives of each of the characters before the crash and into the way the media and criminal investigations can shape the perception of what happened. While I wanted to learn the cause of the crash I was just as interested in the lives of each of the characters and especially how the relationship between Scott and JJ developed. Before the Fall will hook you with the plane crash and the beautiful writing will keep you turning pages until the end. -Nancy M., store volunteer (seconded by Melissa Oates, store employee) Edgar Award Winner for Best Novel.

8 JOHNSON, JULIA CLAIBORNE BE FRANK WITH ME
William Morrow 2016 0062413724 / 9780062413727 PAPERBACK .
William Morrow 9/6/2016. New paperback. Store pick, recommended by Melissa: When Alice is sent from her desk job at a New York publishing house to the Bel Air mansion of M.M. Banning, a reclusive one-hit wonder in the literary world, she relishes the idea of doing something new and helping Mimi write her next great novel. But it turns out, she's mostly wanted to take care of Frank, Mimi's 9-year-old son, a precocious genius who loves old Hollywood movies and dresses better than anyone you've ever met, but who can't seem to bring himself to socialize with other kids. As Alice is charmed by Frank, she starts to wonder about the life Mimi has built for the two of them and whether she actually has a place in it, however temporary. Fans of Graeme Simsion's The Rosie Project will be drawn to Frank and his social awkwardness that somehow manages to also be endearing. -Melissa O., store employee

DARKTOWN, MULLEN, THOMAS
11 MULLEN, THOMAS DARKTOWN
Atria Books 2017 150113387X / 9781501133879 PAPERBACK .
Atria Books 6/6/2017. New paperback. Store pick, recommended by Jill: Darktown is inspired by the experience of the first black police officers hired by the Atlanta Police Department in 1948. Putting myself in the shoes of these newly minted policeman who were not allowed to arrest white suspects or drive squad cards or even set foot in police headquarters was both demoralizing and oddly heartening. After reading Darktown there is no way to close your eyes to the legacy of racism in our police forces, yet we have come so far since that time that it gives me hope that we can work together to solve this issue once and for all. -Jill Hendrix, store owner
