Flatiron 1/31/2017. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: Scarlett lives on an island with her sister Tella and their abusive father. Scarlett is about to be married to a man she's never met, which she thinks will be their ticket away from their father. But before the wedding, Tella, with the help of a sailor they've just met, whisks Scarlett away to the magical Carnaval, an enchanted wonderland game where the audience gets to participate and nothing is as it seems. But this year, the game revolves around Tella, who has disappeared, and Scarlett knows the stakes are much higher than the wish that is the prize. Scarlett's adventure through Carnaval teaches her about risk-taking, love and heartbreak, and just how far she's willing to go for the sister who means everything to her. 86 GOODMAN, CAROL RIVER ROAD
Touchstone 2017 150110991X / 9781501109911 PAPERBACK .
Touchstone 1/3/2017. New paperback. Store pick: Nan Lewis was still grieving the death of her young daughter 6 years earlier, a death which she still blamed herself for. She had gone inside to write down an idea for her new novel and she didnít see when Emmy ran into the road and was hit by a car. Nan no longer wrote but she was dedicated to the students in her creative writing classes at Acheron College. Her job was her whole life. So she was horrified when one of her favorite students was killed by a hit and run driver and even more horrified when she realized she was a prime suspect. She was determined to find out what really happened that night Ė a night when she was very upset because of being denied tenure, had a little too much to drink, had hit a deer on her way home and had passed out sitting on a bench in the woods near where the hit and run occurred. All of a sudden friends, students and colleagues were all suspect and Nan began to question her own actions before the horrible accident. River Road is a beautifully written, atmospheric psychological thriller where everyone is harboring a secret but only one person is guilty. -Nancy M., store volunteer

FALSE POSITIVE (DETECTIVE COOPER DEVERAUX, NO 1), GRANT, ANDREW
89 GRANT, ANDREW FALSE POSITIVE (DETECTIVE COOPER DEVERAUX, NO 1)
Ballantine Books 2016 034554076X / 9780345540768 PAPERBACK .
Ballantine Books 6/28/2016. New paperback. Store pick: A seven year old child has been kidnapped and Det. Cooper Devereaux, just returned from one of his many suspensions, is given the case. Though Devereaux doesnít often play well with others, and isnít a stickler for the rules he is a great detective and his boss Ė one of his only supporters Ė knows if anyone can find this child he can. I really liked Devereaux even before his back story was slowly revealed. And by the end of the book he was truly a hero Ė flawed and vulnerable but full of the right stuff. As Devereaux dug farther and farther into things his intuition told him were connected to the kidnapping he discovered many truths about himself and others in his life -- truths about mass murderers, bloodlines, mental illness and obsession. This twisty, totally unpredictable page turner is the beginning, I hope, of a long line of Det. Cooper Devereaux stories. -Nancy M., store volunteer

Little, Brown and Company 9/8/2015. New paperback. 2016-17 SC Young Adult Book Award nominee. Store pick: The Walled City of Hak Nam exists apart from the rest of Seng Ngai, as a lawless entity unto itself. It is populated by criminals and vagrants. Jin is lying low and posing as a boy until she can find her sister, Mei Yee, who was sold to a brothel owned by Longwai, drug lord and leader of the Brotherhood, the most ruthless gang in Hak Nam. And Dai is posing as a vagrant, biding his time until he can bring the whole thing down. The three teens form bonds that defy all of their rules of survival and must rely on each other in a race against time with escape as the prize. This contemporary YA novel based on a real walled city has a dystopian feel to it that will make it appeal to readers of both types of fiction. -Melissa O., store employee Signed by author.

93 GRIFFITHS, ELLY ZIG ZAG GIRL
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 2016 0544811879 / 9780544811874 PAPERBACK .
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 9/6/2016. New paperback. Store pick: This smartly written, old fashioned, murder mystery, take place in England in the early Ď50ís and tells the story of a group of magicians (loosely based on the Magic Gang who were stationed in Egypt ) who served together in Scotland during WWII and are reunited 5 years later after the death of one of their fellow servicemen. Highly energized and fast paced, the story takes you back more than half a century, where Edgar uses his skills as a policeman to assemble the clues. We are given clues, and red herrings and with no cell phones, no DNA, and no crime lab, it is a wonderfully refreshing novel! -Nancy M., Store volunteer

Minotaur Books 8/23/2016. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: I have read many WWII/ holocaust stories but none that kept me on the edge of my seat like The One Man did. Nathan Blum, who escaped from Poland, and now has a desk job with the US army intelligence division bravely agrees to break into Auschwitz to try and bring back with him Alfred Mendl, a scientist whose knowledge could help the allies win the war. Nathan knows from the beginning that this is probably a suicide mission but it is a way for him to help assuage the guilt he feels for escaping when his entire family was killed. There are so many horrors, so many ups and downs, so many twists and turns and a narrative that goes at such break neck speed that you will want to stop and take a break from reading so you can absorb it all, but you wonít be able to put it down once you start. 97 HAMILTON, STEVE SECOND LIFE OF NICK MASON
Putnam 2017 0399574344 / 9780399574344 PAPERBACK .
Putnam 4/18/2017. New paperback. Store pick: Nick Mason isnít a good guy. He is a thief who ended up in prison when one of his partners freaked out during a robbery and killed someone. But, he isnít a bad guy either. He took the rap and never ratted out his best friend or the jerk who got him in the mess he found himself in. He was a good family guy when he got talked in to one last job and more than anything else he would love to have his family back. When he is offered the chance to be free after only 5 years he canít refuse but he soon finds himself anything but free. His life is now owned by a bad guy who is truly bad. Thus begins the second life of Nick Mason. This was a great read Ė Nick is one of the most interesting protagonists I have encountered in quite awhile and I canít wait to read more of how he balances working for a bad guy and trying to stay alive and out of prison, while at the same time trying to atone for his sins of the past. -Nancy M., store volunteer

MY LADY JANE, HAND, CYNTHIA

HarperCollins 2016 0062391747 / 9780062391742 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
HarperCollins 6/7/2016. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Co-written by Brodi Ashton, Jodi Meadows. Store pick: While not quite historically accurate, this is a fun romp through an alternate 16th-century England in which Henry VIII is wont to turn into a lion and eat people when he is angry (it's where the phrase, 'Don't eat the messenger,' comes from), Edward VI doesn't die (though he is poisoned by his advisers, he escapes by flying out the window), Jane Grey does marry what's-his-name (just call him G), but then she finds out he's a horse (but only during the day). A little bit of history serves as the inspirational base, then add all the intrigue of a royal court, some romance, a few shape-shifters thrown in for good measure, and tongue-in-cheek humor throughout, all combining for a vastly entertaining read. -Melissa, store employee

99 HARPER, JANE DRY
Flatiron 2017 1250105609 / 9781250105608 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Flatiron 1/10/2017. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: Federal Agent Aaron Falk has not been back to his home town in twenty years. Not since he and his father were run out of town on suspicion Aaron had something to do with the death of his 16 year old friend and classmate Ellie. The small country town of Kiewarra in Australia was suffering from years of severe drought. Businesses have closed and farmers are desperate so no one was terribly surprised when it seemed that Luke, Aaron's former best friend, had taken his own life and that of his wife and son. But, Lukeís parents are sure that something else has happened and they shame Aaron into agreeing to look into the deaths. Richly and flawlessly written, this story has great characters and a stunning plot. Itís hot and itís dry and you can feel it! Every page builds suspense, and there is just enough reference to the past to keep you in suspense about what really happened twenty years ago and what really happened to Luke. -Nancy M., store volunteer
