SOUTHERN HEAT (BRACK PELTON, NO 1), BURNSWORTH, DAVID
41 BURNSWORTH, DAVID SOUTHERN HEAT (BRACK PELTON, NO 1)
Five Star 2014 1432828002 / 9781432828004 HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Five Star 2/26/2014. New hardcover. in Brand New jacket. Later printing. Store pick: Brack Pelton is still grieving the death of his wife and still regretting that his three years as a Marine in Afghanastan didn’t get him killed, when he witnesses the death of his uncle in an alley in Charleston. Determined to find his uncle’s killer, Brack teams up with some unlikely help as he tries to stay alive and out of jail. I loved Brack’s attitude and his sarcasm, I loved the characters that he teamed up with, I loved the setting and I loved the story. I hope this isn’t the last we see of Brack Pelton and Pirate’s Cove. -Nancy M., store volunteer Signed by author.

AFTER THE CRASH, BUSSI, MICHEL
42 BUSSI, MICHEL AFTER THE CRASH
Hachette Book Group 2017 0316309699 / 9780316309691 PAPERBACK .
Hachette Book Group 1/3/2017. New paperback. Store pick: In 1980 a plane crashes in the French alps and the only survivor is a 3 month old infant who was thrown clear of the wreckage and the resulting fire. Her survival was considered a miracle but even more unbelievable was the coincidence that there were two female infants the same age aboard the flight. With no identifying marks and no DNA at the time, what ensued was a bitter custody battle by two families – one very rich and the other very poor. A detective is hired to try and find the truth but after 18 years totally devoted to the case he has decided he was a complete failure and is on the verge of committing suicide when he sees a piece of evidence in all of his papers that suddenly makes sense. One of the most brilliantly written crime novels I’ve read in a while! A real page turner… I read all but the last 60 pages in one sitting. Lots of twists and turns and a huge build up finally come together in a surprising ending. A very good book! -Nancy M., store volunteer

FELLSIDE, CAREY, M. R.
47 CAREY, M. R. FELLSIDE
Orbit 2017 0316300276 / 9780316300278 PAPERBACK .
Orbit 3/21/2017. New paperback. Store pick: I expected dark and perhaps brutal – it was after all taking place in a maximum security prison for serious offenders – but I wasn’t expecting the supernatural element. Normally, that would have immediately turned me off but it was so well done and so almost believable that I continued reading. Besides, by that time I was already hooked by Jess. Fellside is a powerfully written story about drugs, love and hate, and power and corruption. It is an interesting look at the workings inside a prison and an equally interesting study of the human soul. -Nancy M., store volunteer

Flatiron 5/3/2016. New hardcover. First US Edition. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: Eddie Flynn was a great con-man and an even better lawyer until the aftermath of a disastrous case, which he won, ended with his law license suspended for 6 months, his wife leaving him, and with him spending time in rehab. He vowed never to set foot in a courtroom again but that all changed when the head of the Russian mob kidnapped his young daughter and told Eddie that he had 24 hours to get him acquitted for murder or his daughter would die. The Defense is one of the best legal thrillers I have read in years. The courtroom drama is smart and tricky and shows that there isn’t much difference between a con-man and a good lawyer – think Perry Mason on steroids. Out of the courtroom Eddie becomes a Mission Impossible style action figure and really puts the thrill in thriller. -Nancy M., store volunteer Signed by author.

Minotaur Books 2017 1250080819 / 9781250080813 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Minotaur Books 4/25/2017. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: Aleksi is a spy – and a very good one – but not by choice. He is a Russian orphan who learned to survive by stealing for food and money and by being very, very observant. When he is caught by the Russian secret police in 1936 at age 16 he is given two options – be trained as a spy and go to Germany in the guise of his once boyhood friend who is the long lost nephew of a high ranking German, or go to prison. Aleksi is a survivor – he becomes a spy first for Russia and then for Germany not because of any sense of patriotism or family loyalty but because he wants to live a good life and survive. Based on historical facts, this is one of the best spy novels I’ve read and really highlights how the course of history could have been changed by one single spy. -Nancy M., store volunteer

RAGDOLL, COLE, DANIEL
58 COLE, DANIEL RAGDOLL
Ecco 2017 0062653954 / 9780062653956 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Ecco 4/4/2017. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: Ragdoll definitely lives up to all of the hype. It is a gory, inventive, story of murder and mayhem with enough black humor and one liners to help lighten it up. Detective William Fawkes (Wolf) has enough baggage from a past trial and commitment to a mental hospital that you can’t help but wait for him to self-destruct on a daily basis. His ex-wife and his ex-partner are both as beautifully flawed as he is. When a body composed of parts of 6 other people (Ragdoll) is found hanging in a flat opposite Wolf’s he has to try and identify the victims as well as the killer. When his ex-wife, a news reporter, starts receiving info from the killer the media turns the entire murder investigation as well as the lives of the main players into a reality show. I gave up trying to figure out the who and the why and just settled down for the ride of my life. -Nancy M., store volunteer
