SECOND MRS. HOCKADAY, RIVERS, SUSAN
241 RIVERS, SUSAN SECOND MRS. HOCKADAY
Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill 2017 1616205814 / 9781616205812 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill 1/10/2017. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: This is an amazing book, I simply loved everything about it. Any fan of historical fiction, novels about human failings and dialog that is almost poetic should read this book. The depiction of the civil war on a very personal level to one woman is stirring and hard to take in. The book is a series of letters to and from various family members and by then end of the first 30 pages you feel invested in every member involved. In some ways it is a revisit to the time when letters were the form of communication that existed and what a picture they could paint. It is hard to believe this is a debut novel, the writing is wonderful. -Jackie W., store volunteer (seconded by Melissa O., store employee) Signed by author.

251 SCHOFIELD, DOUGLAS TIME OF DEPARTURE
St. Martin's Griffin 2016 1250106206 / 9781250106209 PAPERBACK .
St. Martin's Griffin 11/1/2016. New paperback. Store pick: Wow! What a great book and what a surprise. I was hooked from the beginning by the story of young, state prosecutor Claire Talbot who is the newly appointed felony division chief. She is tough as nails and has to prove herself daily to many old school cops. It didnít help at all when a newly discovered grave linked back to crimes which occurred thirty years earlier and when a mysterious ex-cop who worked the original cases suddenly appeared to help her. Mid-way through the book I began to realize that all was not as it seemed but by that time I was so involved with the mystery and the emerging and compelling love story that I didnít care. Time of Departure was a wonderful read and one I probably would never have picked up if I had known the surprising twist. -Nancy M., store volunteer

St. Martin's Press 3/14/2017. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: Radical Candor is the best book on being a boss (i.e., managing people) that I've ever read. Kim's system is elegantly simple, imminently useful, and applicable to anyone who has ever been an employee or an employer. Unlike the dry tone of most business books, Kim sounds like an older sister sharing hard-won experiences and her gossipy Silicon Valley examples also make the book a fun peek into the tech companies like Google and Apple that are now mainstays of the Fortune 500. -Jill Hendrix, Fiction Addiction

But this incomplete name is all that was heard before Rump's mother died, leaving him to search for his own destiny -- which of course involves spinning straw into gold and bargaining for a girl's first-born child. But this re-telling of Rumpelstiltskin stands out for its imagination and characterization, and readers will be rooting for Rump like they never did for the man in the fairy tale. -Melissa O., store employee

Simon & Schuster 6/3/2014. New paperback. Store pick: This is a romance from a different perspective. Don obviously has undiagnosed Asperger's syndrome, and the book is written in first-person from Don's point of view. He's very much aware of his social shortcomings, and his differences make him a unique character that you can't help but like and root for as he gets to know Rosie and tries to see himself through her eyes while attempting to sort through all of his own new, unnamed, irrational emotions and reactions. --Melissa Oates, store employee

260 SITTENFELD, CURTIS ELIGIBLE: A MODERN RETELLING OF PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Penguin Random House 2017 0812980344 / 9780812980349 PAPERBACK .
Penguin Random House 4/18/2017. New paperback. Store pick: I love Jane Austen, and Pride and Prejudice is my favorite, but I'm not usually a fan of Austen re-writes. This one, though, is pitch perfect. The contemporary setting makes it fresh enough for readers to become invested even though the characters are familiar. And Sittenfeld does a tremendous job of translating Austen's story, so to speak, to make it resonate with modern readers. I love this book! -Melissa O., store employee
