201 LEPIONKA, KRISTEN WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE (ROXANE WEARY, NO 2)
Minotaur Books 2018 1250120535 / 9781250120533 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Minotaur Books 5/1/2018. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. What You Want to See is a terrific follow-up to the first book in the Roxanne Weary series. There is no need to read the first book first but you will want to after you read What You Want to See. PI Roxanne has a seemingly simple and boring case – follow someone’s fiancée to see if she is cheating on him. But, when the person she is following is killed (the day after she quits following her) and her client is the main suspect Roxanne finds herself looking at things from a totally different angle. She has been warned off by the police and can’t even rely on her father’s old partner to help her but she questions people and she listens and she eventually starts putting things together. The mystery is well written and the storyline is intriguing. But, the real star is Roxanne Weary. I love her sense of humor and her grittiness and her determination to find answers when she thinks things just don’t feel right. -Nancy M., store volunteer

206 LODATO, VICTOR EDGAR AND LUCY
St. Martin's Press 2017 1250096987 / 9781250096982 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
St. Martin's Press 3/7/2017. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick, recommended by Nancy M.: Edgar and Lucy is about family - a terribly broken family that faces crisis after crisis and yet never gives up trying to be a family. The main narrator is 8 year old Edgar – a very special child who is brilliant beyond his years and yet has a problem relating to most anyone except for his grandmother. Edgar’s mother Lucy loves him in her own way but thanks to his grandmother Florence, Lucy really doesn’t have to make much of an effort. When Florence dies everything changes. A stunning novel, richly written, dark at times, raw and bold… Written with an uncanny feel for life and for death, this intelligently written novel kept me spellbound, waiting for the conclusion, but unwilling for the story to end. -Nancy M., store volunteer

St. Martin's Press 2018 1250182263 / 9781250182265 First US Edition. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
St. Martin's Press 9/11/2018. New hardcover. First US Edition. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: What if 4-year-old William had been looking the other way and hadn’t seen his mother’s car? What if Joe hadn’t followed his wife? Would Joe have found out that what he thought was a perfect marriage was really a lie? Would Joe have ended up on the verge of being arrested for murder because of overwhelming evidence (mostly because of smart phones and social media) that he had killed his wife’s lover? We will never know the what if’s because Joe did follow his wife’s car that night, and he did have an altercation with Ben, and Ben has not been seen since. The lies just keep building until you are sure that you finally know the truth and then you are totally blindsided by the ending. One of the scariest – because innocent people can be charged and found guilty of murders they haven’t committed – and best reads of the year! -Nancy M., store volunteer (seconded by Jackie W., store volunteer)

210 LOWREY, ANNIE GIVE PEOPLE MONEY: HOW A UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME WOULD END POVERTY, REVOLUTIONIZE WORK, AND REMAKE TH
Crown Publishers, Inc. 2018 1524758760 / 9781524758769 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Crown Publishers, Inc. 7/10/2018. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: I read the War on Normal People by Andrew Yang and really liked his analysis of the present and recent past but thought his UBI argument was just thrown in at the end and not very convincing. Annie's book focuses solely on UBI and tries to put it context of today's political climate. Her left-leaning tendencies come through pretty clearly in certain chapters but I still thought it was a well-researched book and a good follow up to the War on Normal People for those like myself who think/fear that technology (AI, driverless cars) may be about to completely disrupt life as we know it. -Jill Hendrix, store owner

214 LYNN, KENDEL BOARD STIFF (ELLIOTT LISBON, NO 1)
Henery Press 2013 193838332X / 9781938383328 PAPERBACK .
Henery Press 4/30/2013. New paperback. Store pick, recommended by Nancy M.: Board Stiff is a terrific blend of mystery, humor and just enough sexual tension to make it interesting. Elliot Lisbon (Ellie) has an interesting job as the director of the prestigious Ballantyne Foundation. The story is set on an Island off the coast of SC? Hilton Head, perhaps? The mystery is believable and the culprit and motive was a surprise. The writing was sharp and witty. The characters were fun and quirky. What more could you ask for in a great cozy? I can't wait to read more about Elliot Lisbon and her quest for her private investigator's license. Fans of Susan Boyer will love it. -Nancy M., store volunteer

216 MACMILLAN, GILLY I KNOW YOU KNOW
William Morrow 2018 0062698605 / 9780062698605 PAPERBACK .
William Morrow 9/18/2018. New paperback. Store pick: I Know You Know is framed through a series of true crime podcasts produced by Cody Swift, whose two best friends were murdered 20 years earlier, when they were just 10 years old. Cody is convinced the man who was convicted of their murders was not guilty and hopes that time will uncover facts that weren’t discovered then. Coincidentally, as the podcast starts the bones of a long missing man are discovered near the spot that the boys’ murder took place. Detective Fletcher, one of the two detectives who discovered the murdered boys 20 years earlier is given the new case. The story switches back and forth from 20 years ago to present and is told mainly from the view point of Cody, Detective Fletcher, and Jessica Paige, the mother of one of the murdered boys. Cody is vigilant in trying to find the truth, even when being threatened and told to stop. Or, does he have an ulterior motive? Jess, who has a new life with a husband and 16 yo daughter, has not told her daughter about the son she had when only 16. She has vowed to be a real mother to Erica and is riddled with guilt because of how neglectful she was as a very young mother. Or, is she riddled with guilt because she actually had something to do with harming her son? Fletcher has always been overly ambitions and has ignored procedure to accomplish what he thought was justice. But, was he a good guy who just wanted to catch the bad guy or was he corrupt? Gilly MacMillan gives us a thrilling saga that spans 20 years, a saga you are immediately pulled into. Switching back and forth from the past to the present lets you really get to know the characters and why they developed as they did. You will go from loving them to hating them and back again until you finally find out their true character and what really happened 20 years ago. -Nancy M., store volunteer

217 MACMILLAN, GILLY PERFECT GIRL
William Morrow 2016 0062476769 / 9780062476760 PAPERBACK .
William Morrow 9/6/2016. New paperback. Store pick, recommended by Nancy M.: 14 year old Zoey Maisey was a gifted pianist – a child prodigy – when a tragic accident changed her life in a way she could not imagine. She discovered that telling the truth when others lie doesn’t always lead to justice and she was convicted of a horrific crime and spent 9 months in a secure facility for what she maintains to this day was an accident. Her mother and father divorce and her father has nothing more to do with her. They move to a new town and begin their ‘second chance’ life. Three years later her mother is dead and Zoey is a suspect. Everyone’s secrets and lies are slowly revealed and Zoey realizes that sometimes you have to do wrong if it is the only way to make things right. The Perfect Girl is a beautifully written story with a heartbreaking plot. It is told from several narratives, unfolding methodically to give us a gripping and complex story… a psychological thriller… a story of second chances or maybe even third chances… a book I could not put down. -Nancy M., store volunteer

218 MACMILLAN, GILLY WHAT SHE KNEW
William Morrow 2018 0062691007 / 9780062691002 PAPERBACK .
William Morrow 1/30/2018. New paperback. Store pick: The story telling in this debut psychological thriller is captivating. It is the story of a mother’s anguish and desperation when her 8 year old son runs ahead on a trail on an ordinary Sunday afternoon walk in a park and vanishes. It is the story of the lead detective which is told partly in sessions he has with a psychologist because of the toll the case took on his personal life. It is a story of family and friends and secrets they have been keeping that are slowly revealed. And it is the story of how the media and the public are quick to point fingers and assign blame as shown through newspaper clippings and blog entries. But, most of all it is a story of a mother’s love and her strength and will to push everything aside and do anything to bring her son home. -Nancy M., store volunteer

220 MAMET, DAVID CHICAGO
Custom House 2018 0062797190 / 9780062797193 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Custom House 2/27/2018. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Signed by the author on a tipped-in page. Store pick: This period piece will take you back to the outlaw prohibition days in Chicago, and will not disappoint with well developed characters and a powerful and compelling story. Mamet is a writer 'of a style,' and challenges his readers to keep pace. In many ways reading Mamet is like watching a vintage 8mm home movie as his writing can be erratic and at times will blur at the edges or seemingly jump randomly from sequence to sequence. But like those old home movies, the images he paints with his words will have a visceral impact. Once you settle in to the cadence and phrasing, and immerse yourself in his inimitable style, you will find yourself standing alongside Mike Hodge as he lives a story of love, murder and revenge. This is a strong story well told, and I would call it a solid 4/5. -Brent, store volunteer Signed by author.
