163 JOINSON, SUZANNE PHOTOGRAPHER'S WIFE
Bloomsbury 2017 1620408317 / 9781620408315 PAPERBACK .
Bloomsbury 2/7/2017. New paperback. Store pick, recommended by Jackie: A sweeping novel about a young girl who lives with her Father in Jerusalem prior to the war. She is eleven and has an absurd amount of freedom, and with that comes the potential for disaster. We follow Prue through her marriage and birth of her child. The focus of the book is the incredible way tragedies in childhood can impact your entire life. Parts of the novel are hard to read, but the brutality that exists in the world is brought to life by the authors words. A strong historical aspect but the main story is that of Prue's life. For any fan of historical fiction based in war time. -Jackie W., store volunteer

Arthur A. Levine Books 4/28/2015. New paperback. Store pick, recommended by Melissa: This is a different take on homosexuality. It shines a light on the fact that even when we accept others' differences, even celebrate them, sometimes it can be hard to see past the 'labels' to what they really want. But as Rafe finds out, it's just as hard, if not more so, to deny something that's innately a part of you. While I wished for a different ending for Rafe, I was glad to have read this book for the perspective, if nothing else. -Melissa O., employee

178 KOPE, SPENCER COLLECTING THE DEAD
St. Martin's Press 2017 1250117658 / 9781250117656 PAPERBACK .
St. Martin's Press 4/4/2017. New paperback. Store pick, recommended by Nancy M.: Magnus 'Steps' Craig has a secret skill that only his father, his boss and his partner know. It is a kind of synethesia which allows him to see a unique essence of people in vivid color and texture and has caused him to be dubbed a human bloodhound by the media. Steps uses this skill as part of a special elite 3 person tracking team of the FBI. It consists of Steps, Jimmy Donovan (the real tactical FBI agent) and Diane, who works magic in the office doing internet research much like Garcia does on Criminal Minds. Steps is not your typical FBI agent. His wise cracks and jokes cover up for the fact that he is deeply affected by the victims he doesnít find in time. He collects pictures of the dead to remind him of his failures. He is particularly haunted by a serial killer from an old case whom he has dubbed Leonardo whose Ďtrailí keeps reappearing as Steps is working on his current case. Highly recommended for fans of Criminal Minds this is a brilliant debut thriller with a troubled but very likeable main character and terrific supporting cast. -Nancy M., store volunteer

Atria Books 3/4/2014. New paperback. Store pick, recommended by Nancy M.: Ordinary Grace is a beautifully written, atmospheric novel that is both a coming-of-age story and an homage to life in a small Midwestern town in the 1960s. It is a quiet, simple story with a huge message and wonderfully developed characters. While there is a murder, the identity of the perpetrator is secondary to how the residents and family members are affected by all the events of the summer of 1961. -Nancy M., store volunteer Edgar Award Winner for Best Novel.
