IDA, ALWAYS, LEVIS, CARON
163 LEVIS, CARON IDA, ALWAYS
Atheneum 2016 1481426400 / 9781481426404 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
Atheneum 2/23/2016. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Illustrated by Charles Santoso. Store pick: Gus and Ida are polar bears at the Central Park Zoo, and they are the best of friends, doing everything together. Then one day, Ida gets sick, and Gus has to deal with feelings he's never had before, and he has to do it without his friend. My 6-year-old, who does not like to cry, sobbed while reading this book, but she wanted to read it again and again, and event wanted to share it with her class. This book is special. It speaks to people, kids and grown-ups, even if they haven't been through something like Gus has. I love that Gus (and Ida) roars his anger at losing his friend, that he doesn't want to do anything without his friend, that it's not just left at, 'He was sad and cried a lot, but then he felt better.' There is so much more to grief than tears, and this book has captured that so well. It is a gift. -Melissa, store employee & mother of two

164 LINDSTROM, ERIC NOT IF I SEE YOU FIRST
Poppy 2016 031625987X / 9780316259873 PAPERBACK .
Poppy 11/1/2016. New paperback. Store pick: Parker is blind and has been for years. She copes by not caring what anyone thinks of her -- as long as they follow The Rules, a set of what she considers common sense guidelines for dealing with someone who's blind. Rules she enforces even more since her best friend Scott broke her heart two and a half years ago. But when Scott shows back up, Parker starts to realize that maybe she doesn't know everything she thought she did. Lindstrom has a way of getting you into his character's head, making you see things from her perspective that you wouldn't otherwise be able to. I thoroughly enjoyed it. -Melissa O., store employee

Poppy 2/7/2017. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: Mel is 16 and bipolar. Except her friends know nothing about her diagnosis. Which might be why they're not her friends any more, after Mel pushed them away when she was sick for months last year. Now her time is mostly spent at home with her equally but differently bipolar aunt and at the retirement home where Mel works. Until something happens that brings all of the emotion from Mel's past into her present, threatening her new relationships and her mental well-being. This is an educational view of mental illness in general and bipolar disorder in particular, delving into it in a way that makes it very understandable, and with a relatable character. -Melissa O., store employee

WILDE LAKE, LIPPMAN, LAURA
166 LIPPMAN, LAURA WILDE LAKE
William Morrow 2016 0062083457 / 9780062083456 First Edition, First Printing. HARDCOVER in Brand New jacket.
William Morrow 5/3/2016. New hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. in Brand New jacket. Store pick: This is a book that I had a hard time putting down, and now my favorite Laura Lippman book. Told in the first person by Lu, a younger sister to a dynamic brother, motherless daughter of a hard working Father of the 70's living in a time when wandering around alone was not considered risky. The book starts with Lu as a six year old precocious and extremely smart and then introduces us to 45 year old Lu who is a widowed Mother to eight year old twins living back home with her Father and just elected to his old job of the district attorney. This book will haunt anyone who thinks the past remains in the past. I found Lu a complex character who was both likable and hard to understand. The interactions of the characters are first rate and you will be engaged with all of them. The lead up to the ending will keep you on the edge of your seat unsure of which shoe will drop. For fans of Gillian Flynn, Karin Slaughter, Lisa Gardner and Alafair Burke. -Jackie W., store volunteer

Edgar’s mother Lucy loves him in her own way but thanks to his grandmother Florence, Lucy really doesn’t have to make much of an effort. When Florence dies everything changes. 174 MACMILLAN, GILLY WHAT SHE KNEW
William Morrow 2015 0062413864 / 9780062413864 PAPERBACK .
William Morrow 12/1/2015. New paperback. Store pick: The story telling in this debut psychological thriller is captivating. It is the story of a mother’s anguish and desperation when her 8 year old son runs ahead on a trail on an ordinary Sunday afternoon walk in a park and vanishes. It is the story of the lead detective which is told partly in sessions he has with a psychologist because of the toll the case took on his personal life. It is a story of family and friends and secrets they have been keeping that are slowly revealed. And it is the story of how the media and the public are quick to point fingers and assign blame as shown through newspaper clippings and blog entries. But, most of all it is a story of a mother’s love and her strength and will to push everything aside and do anything to bring her son home. -Nancy M., store volunteer
